Each year, VizThink will be supporting philanthropic organizations with similar missions to our own. This year, we’re privileged to be able to support two great organizations. The first of which is Artrain USA.
Artrain USA is America’s Hometown Art Museum. A non-profit organization based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Artrain USA has been a leader and pioneer in taking art and cultural programming to communities throughout the nation. With five rail cars housing a fine arts exhibition, artist studio, gift shop and staff administrative space, Artrain USA brings exceptional educational opportunities and community activities made possible by the generosity of the nation’s railroads. Since its inception in 1971, more than 2.9 million people in 725 communities across the country have visited Artrain USA.
We’ll hear from Deb Polich and Brian Tolle about how the visual thinking community can help such
a worthy cause.

VizThink Challenge
 |
| Often, it’s not about the tools we use, but the process we go through to come up with visual thinking solutions. This segment is designed to show just that, and we’ve got three great people to help us with that including Jamie Nast, Christine Martell, and David Sibbet. We’re going to put these three leaders on the spot by bringing them up on stage and presenting them with a real world communications problem. They’ll have never seen it before and have no time to prepare. Their job, with your help, will be to come up with a visual thinking solution, and we’ll look at how they approach it and what they come up with. However, they won’t be in it alone. Each of the tables in the audience will work on the problem too. This segment promises to be a fascinating look into the similarities and differences between visual thinking approaches.

Here is a series of posts created by Christine Martell at VisualsSpeak about the data from the VizThink Challenge at VizThink 08. In the analysis we show the potential of what can be gleaned from a large group, even when they have only a short time to work.
These posts will give you an idea of how a VisualsSpeak strategic thinking process can be applied to businesses to get fast, in-depth results. This process can be customized based on the out come you want to achieve.
VizThink Challenge: Overview
This post introduces the structure of the data set. Also how framing the question is of paramount importance to getting you the best results.
This post shows the images that were most frequently chosen and the variety of participant interpretations about those images. Also an in-depth discussion of what images were chosen as compared to what Artrain is using now and how that might impact Artrain's marketing decisions.
This is an overview of a content analysis of the words participants used, offering one framework for looking at this type of data set. Because there were distinct approaches to the process, the information obtained could be used successfully to engage the different needs of each market segment Artrain is appealing to.
The final post in the series talks about looking at the overall image structure and how the images and words work together. More information on how the data can be used for marketing and strategic planning.
